Tide Guide Surfing Safari!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to surf, but Hawaii was just too far away? Surfer extraordinaire Bill Minor has the know-how to teach you everything you wanted to know about the sport of hawaiian kings.

WHEN: July-October, when the water is 88 degrees. The Safari begins Friday night. We will camp on the beach 2 nights and surf 2 days. Of course, showers and bathrooms are within walking distance.

SURFBOARDS: Traditional Longboards 9’ 10' in length.

PRICE: $175.00 per person includes lodging, good food, boards and instruction.

BRING: A pillow, quarters for the shower, your own drinking cup, a sheet and blanket or sleeping bag, and beach clothes.

SAFETY:
#1 Learn to say no when your nervous or tired and then paddle in for a rest.
#2 Don't ever try to impress anybody out there.
#3 Quit while you're ahead.
#4 Never be embarrassed to use caution.
The Ocean does have a soul, but it treats everybody the same. If you get arrogant and or too bold it will let you know it's time to go recover on the beach. We at Tide Guide want you to have good time, and no one has a good time while injured. If you follow our four simple rules, you and your party will have a safe and fun time, and hopefully come back for more. We do love repeat buisness!

I will issue personal flotation devices if you wish. These surfboards are equipped with a leash or strap, which Velcro's to your ankle, so you won't get separated from your board which easily, floats a 300-pound person. We are going to use a buddy system, one board for 2 surfers. While you are out with the instructor your buddy must be on shore and alert and watching you practice. We will spend some time Saturday morning after breakfast on dry land explaining how to safely catch a wave. You will be surfing the two inside bars where the water is chest deep. You'll be amazed how these sweet long boards can make the drop to catch a wave. Only advanced experts will be allowed outside on the 3rd bar. We don't want any wipeouts jeopardizing you or our fine boards. You are partaking in an athletic event, treat yourself like a champ. B.Y.O.B. We ask for safety reasons to drink after the boards are put up for the night.

PREPARATION: At home, try lying prone on the floor. Do a push up then bring your knees up under your stomach with your hands still on the floor. Then quickly rise to a surfing stance: either goofy foot or regular foot. This means one foot in front of the other at a 90-degree angle to the length of the imaginary board. Bend your knees as soon as you get up, then arms out for balance. Preform as many as you quickly can.

SURF CLOTHES: While surfing we recommend you wear board shorts and a tee shirt over your swim suit to guard against chaffing from the wax on the deck of the board.

WORLD PEACE BEGINS WITH SURFING

Hello Fellow Surfer,

A little bit about me, your surf instructor. I learned and perfected my surfing in Hawaii where I was a Harbormaster on the small outer island of Lanai. I've surfed in Costa Rica and now here in Texas. This is a terrific sport and I do it more than anything just to relax and soak in the warm water. I have also been a World Champion Freestyle skier and for years a ski instructor at Sun Valley Idaho. I'll be able to help you develop your own style. This is really a fun little fantasy and don't be surprised if you actually stand up and learn to control the board. I promise not to laugh too much while your getting used to things. I was a beginner once myself. This is potentially a dangerous sport but worth every minute. I'll use all the safety precautions I have learned.

Respectfully,

Bill Minor Tide Guide

P.S. You'll be surfing on the best longboards I could shape so give it a good try. Remember beauty is just skin deep, so all people are welcome: skinny, short, weak, tough, young, old, banker, or janitor, father - son, mother - daughter housewife or model. Bring some friends and your family, meet new people and learn a new sport. If the surf is flat we can still have fun. Texas isn't famous for surfing but I have fun every time.
